Description

Full Speed A Hedge® 'American Pillar' Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis 'American Pillar') is the ultimate narrow privacy tree — a fast-growing, ultra-slim columnar evergreen that shoots straight up to 25 feet tall while staying just 4 feet wide. Perfect for tight lot lines, side yards, and anywhere you need serious height without sacrificing space. It establishes quickly, holds a dense green wall without pruning, and stays structurally sound through ice and heavy snow loads.

Why Gardeners Choose American Pillar Arborvitae

  • Extremely narrow footprint: Reaches up to 25 feet tall at just 4 feet wide — the go-to solution for tight lot lines and narrow side yards.
  • Fast growing: Adds up to 3 feet per year once established — closes privacy gaps in just a few seasons.
  • Year-round screening: Dense, rich green foliage holds its color through winter without browning.
  • Structurally tough: Exceptional resistance to ice splitting and wind deformation — holds its form in harsh winters.
  • Disease resistant: Superior resistance to common blights and insect pressures that affect standard privacy cedars.
  • No pruning required: Maintains its natural columnar form on its own.

Planting & Care

  • Light: Full sun to part shade; 6+ hours daily for best density and growth speed.
  • Soil: Well-drained; blend one-third aged compost into native soil at planting. Set root ball 2 inches above surrounding soil line for optimal drainage.
  • Spacing: Plant on 2.5–3 foot centers for a seamless interlocking screen; position at least 2.5 feet from fences or property lines.
  • Watering: Deep weekly watering April through October in the first season; no fertilizer in year one.
  • Year 2+: Apply high-nitrogen fertilizer in early spring to fuel vertical growth. Keep lawn chemicals 10–20 feet from root zones.
  • Deer protection: Use physical barriers or repellent on young trees during the first few seasons.

Shipping Information

  • Ships in quart pots, 8–12 inches tall, fully rooted and ready to plant.
Reviews

When will my order ship?

Most orders ship within 2–5 business days. You'll receive a tracking email as soon as your order is on its way. Shipping times may vary slightly during peak growing season.

How do I plant my new plant when it arrives?

Water your plant thoroughly as soon as it arrives. Choose a location that matches the plant's light requirements, dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, and plant at the same depth it was growing in the pot. Water deeply after planting and keep the soil consistently moist for the first few weeks while roots establish.

What if my plant arrives damaged?

We stand behind every plant we ship. If your plant arrives damaged or in poor condition, please contact us within 5 days of delivery with a photo and we'll make it right — replacement or refund, your choice.

What growing zones do your plants ship to?

Most of our plants are suited to USDA Hardiness Zones 5–9. Each product page includes the specific zone range for that plant. Some plants cannot ship to certain states due to agricultural regulations — this is noted on individual product pages.
