Description

Ibolium Privet (Ligustrum × ibolium) is the premier fast-growing hedge for northern climates — a cold-hardy hybrid that combines aggressive growth with outstanding shearing tolerance. It knits together into a dense, gap-free living wall quickly, responds beautifully to formal box-cut shaping, and adapts to a wide range of soils and light conditions. Fragrant white flower panicles in late spring add seasonal interest before giving way to small blue-black berries in fall.

Why Gardeners Choose Ibolium Privet

  • Fast growing: Adds 1–2 feet of dense vertical growth per year — closes privacy gaps quickly.
  • Cold hardy to Zone 4: Maintains structural integrity through freezing northern winters where other privets fail.
  • Exceptional shearing response: Takes formal pruning beautifully — the top choice for crisp, geometric hedge lines.
  • Adaptable: Thrives in full sun to part shade and tolerates urban conditions, variable pH, and lean soils.
  • Spring fragrance: Creamy white flower panicles in late spring attract bees and butterflies.
  • Matures to 8–12 feet tall: Provides substantial screening height at full size.

Planting & Care

  • Light: Full sun to part shade; minimum 4–6 hours of daily sun for best density.
  • Soil: Well-drained; adapts to loam, sandy, and variable pH soils.
  • Spacing: Plant on 4-foot centers for a solid, gap-free privacy wall.
  • Watering: Deep, weekly watering April through October during the first season; very low needs once established.
  • Pruning: Shear in early spring and mid-summer for maximum density; always keep the base slightly wider than the top for even light distribution.

Shipping Information

  • Ships as bare-root plants averaging 1–2 feet tall, ready for spring installation.
  • Cannot ship to: Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, or Tennessee.

When will my order ship?

Most orders ship within 2–5 business days. You'll receive a tracking email as soon as your order is on its way. Shipping times may vary slightly during peak growing season.

How do I plant my new plant when it arrives?

Water your plant thoroughly as soon as it arrives. Choose a location that matches the plant's light requirements, dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, and plant at the same depth it was growing in the pot. Water deeply after planting and keep the soil consistently moist for the first few weeks while roots establish.

What if my plant arrives damaged?

We stand behind every plant we ship. If your plant arrives damaged or in poor condition, please contact us within 5 days of delivery with a photo and we'll make it right — replacement or refund, your choice.

What growing zones do your plants ship to?

Most of our plants are suited to USDA Hardiness Zones 5–9. Each product page includes the specific zone range for that plant. Some plants cannot ship to certain states due to agricultural regulations — this is noted on individual product pages.
