Description

Thuja 'Green Giant' (Thuja standishii × plicata) is the gold standard for fast privacy screening — the single most planted evergreen for residential and commercial boundaries in North America. It grows 3–5 feet per year, maintains a naturally tight conical form without pruning, and stays dense from ground to tip. Disease resistant, deer resistant, and adaptable from Zone 5 to 9, it solves privacy problems faster and more reliably than any other screening tree.

Why Gardeners Choose Green Giant Arborvitae

  • Fastest growing privacy screen: 3–5 feet per year under good conditions — closes sight lines in just a few seasons.
  • Self-shaping form: Naturally develops a clean, symmetrical conical silhouette with no shearing required.
  • Deer resistant: Significantly more resistant than American arborvitae — a major advantage for suburban and rural properties.
  • Disease resistant: Outperforms Leyland Cypress and Canadian Hemlock in long-term health and durability.
  • Year-round screening: Rich, deep green foliage holds its color through winter without browning.
  • Climate adaptable: Thrives in Zones 5–9 across a wide range of soil types and conditions.

Planting & Care

  • Light: Full sun to light shade; minimum 4–6 hours daily for best density.
  • Soil: Moist, well-drained; adapts to clay, loam, and sandy soils.
  • Spacing: 5–6 feet on center for a solid interlocking screen; 8 feet apart in a double-staggered row for maximum wind and sound buffering.
  • Watering: Deep watering once or twice a week April through October in the first season; low needs once established.
  • Mulching: Apply organic mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature — keep mulch away from the trunk.
  • Pruning: None required to maintain its natural conical form.

When will my order ship?

Most orders ship within 2–5 business days. You'll receive a tracking email as soon as your order is on its way. Shipping times may vary slightly during peak growing season.

How do I plant my new plant when it arrives?

Water your plant thoroughly as soon as it arrives. Choose a location that matches the plant's light requirements, dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, and plant at the same depth it was growing in the pot. Water deeply after planting and keep the soil consistently moist for the first few weeks while roots establish.

What if my plant arrives damaged?

We stand behind every plant we ship. If your plant arrives damaged or in poor condition, please contact us within 5 days of delivery with a photo and we'll make it right — replacement or refund, your choice.

What growing zones do your plants ship to?

Most of our plants are suited to USDA Hardiness Zones 5–9. Each product page includes the specific zone range for that plant. Some plants cannot ship to certain states due to agricultural regulations — this is noted on individual product pages.
