Description

Red Creeping Thyme (Thymus praecox) is one of the best low-growing plants you can put between pavers, along walkways, and in sunny rock gardens — a dense, mat-forming groundcover that releases a rich herbal fragrance when stepped on and covers itself in pinkish-red blooms in early summer. Drought tolerant, nearly maintenance-free, and tough enough to handle light foot traffic. A beautiful, practical alternative to turf in hot, dry spots where grass struggles.

Why Gardeners Choose Red Creeping Thyme

  • Fragrant underfoot: Releases a clean, sweet herbal scent when brushed or lightly walked on — a sensory bonus along garden paths.
  • Stunning summer bloom: Covers itself in a dense blanket of pinkish-red flowers in early summer, completely masking the foliage beneath.
  • Handles light foot traffic: Flexible enough to bounce back from regular pedestrian use along garden walkways and between stepping stones.
  • Natural weed suppressor: Dense mat habit crowds out weeds between pavers and in sunny border edges.
  • Drought tolerant: Thrives in hot, dry, and lean conditions once established — no mowing, no fussing.
  • Pollinator friendly: Blooms attract bees throughout the flowering season.

Planting & Care

  • Light: Full sun.
  • Soil: Well-drained; tolerates sandy, rocky, and lean soils. Avoid heavy clay or standing water.
  • Spacing: 12–18 inches apart for a solid, interlocking carpet.
  • Watering: Drought tolerant once established; water regularly during the first season.
  • Note: Selected for ornamental use — not recommended for culinary harvesting.

Shipping Information

  • Ships in pint pots, fully rooted and ready to plant.

When will my order ship?

Most orders ship within 2–5 business days. You'll receive a tracking email as soon as your order is on its way. Shipping times may vary slightly during peak growing season.

How do I plant my new plant when it arrives?

Water your plant thoroughly as soon as it arrives. Choose a location that matches the plant's light requirements, dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, and plant at the same depth it was growing in the pot. Water deeply after planting and keep the soil consistently moist for the first few weeks while roots establish.

What if my plant arrives damaged?

We stand behind every plant we ship. If your plant arrives damaged or in poor condition, please contact us within 5 days of delivery with a photo and we'll make it right — replacement or refund, your choice.

What growing zones do your plants ship to?

Most of our plants are suited to USDA Hardiness Zones 5–9. Each product page includes the specific zone range for that plant. Some plants cannot ship to certain states due to agricultural regulations — this is noted on individual product pages.
