Description

Siberian Peashrub (Caragana arborescens) is one of the toughest, most adaptable shrubs in existence — built for the conditions that defeat most other plants. Extreme cold, poor soil, punishing wind, and prolonged drought are where this plant thrives. Fast-growing and nitrogen-fixing, it's the go-to choice for windbreaks, shelterbelts, and property line screening in northern and high-plains climates where standard hedge plants simply won't survive.

Why Gardeners Choose Siberian Peashrub

  • Extreme cold hardiness: One of the most cold-tolerant screening shrubs available — a foundational choice for northern zones and exposed plains.
  • Thrives in poor soil: Naturally fixes nitrogen, sustaining rapid growth in depleted, sandy, rocky, or highly alkaline soils without fertilizer.
  • Windbreak performance: Dense branching structure breaks high-velocity winds, captures drifting snow, and reduces soil erosion.
  • Upright, space-efficient form: Naturally taller than wide — ideal for narrow shelterbelts and property borders.
  • Spring blooms: Bright yellow pea-like flowers in late spring attract native pollinators and add seasonal color.
  • Wildlife value: Seed pods provide winter forage for songbirds.

Planting & Care

  • Light: Full sun.
  • Soil: Highly adaptable — tolerates alkaline, sandy, and compacted soils.
  • Spacing: Plant on 4–6 foot centers for a solid privacy screen or shelterbelt.
  • Watering: Moderate watering after planting to establish roots; extremely low water needs once established.
  • Pruning: Optional — light winter shaping if a formal hedge form is desired.
  • Long-term maintenance: Near zero — no supplemental fertilizer needed.

Shipping Information

  • Ships as dormant bare-root plants, 10–18 inches tall — ready for spring installation.

When will my order ship?

Most orders ship within 2–5 business days. You'll receive a tracking email as soon as your order is on its way. Shipping times may vary slightly during peak growing season.

How do I plant my new plant when it arrives?

Water your plant thoroughly as soon as it arrives. Choose a location that matches the plant's light requirements, dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, and plant at the same depth it was growing in the pot. Water deeply after planting and keep the soil consistently moist for the first few weeks while roots establish.

What if my plant arrives damaged?

We stand behind every plant we ship. If your plant arrives damaged or in poor condition, please contact us within 5 days of delivery with a photo and we'll make it right — replacement or refund, your choice.

What growing zones do your plants ship to?

Most of our plants are suited to USDA Hardiness Zones 5–9. Each product page includes the specific zone range for that plant. Some plants cannot ship to certain states due to agricultural regulations — this is noted on individual product pages.
