Description

Periwinkle (Vinca minor) is one of the most dependable shade groundcovers available — a fast-spreading, trailing evergreen that blankets difficult areas with glossy deep green foliage year-round and covers itself in cheerful periwinkle-blue flowers from early spring through midsummer. Excellent under trees, along shaded banks, and anywhere you need low-maintenance, weed-suppressing coverage in areas where grass struggles to grow.

Why Gardeners Choose Vinca minor

  • Thrives in shade: One of the best performers under heavy tree canopies and in dry shade where turf fails.
  • Long bloom season: Periwinkle-blue flowers from early spring through midsummer — one of the longest flowering windows of any groundcover.
  • True evergreen: Rich, glossy green foliage holds its color through winter, providing year-round coverage.
  • Fast spreading: Quickly establishes a dense, weed-suppressing mat that fills in large areas efficiently.
  • Erosion control: Root system anchors loose soils on slopes and banks where mowing isn't practical.
  • Adaptable: Weaves naturally along brick paths, stone borders, and foundation edges for clean transitions between hardscapes and planted beds.

Planting & Care

  • Light: Full shade to part sun; adapts well across a range of light conditions.
  • Soil: Well-drained, organic-rich preferred; adapts to diverse soil profiles.
  • Spacing: 12 inches apart; 100 plants covers approximately 100 sq. ft.
  • Watering: Regular moisture during establishment; drought tolerant once rooted in.
  • Maintenance: Light annual edging to keep spread in bounds along design borders.

When will my order ship?

Most orders ship within 2–5 business days. You'll receive a tracking email as soon as your order is on its way. Shipping times may vary slightly during peak growing season.

How do I plant my new plant when it arrives?

Water your plant thoroughly as soon as it arrives. Choose a location that matches the plant's light requirements, dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, and plant at the same depth it was growing in the pot. Water deeply after planting and keep the soil consistently moist for the first few weeks while roots establish.

What if my plant arrives damaged?

We stand behind every plant we ship. If your plant arrives damaged or in poor condition, please contact us within 5 days of delivery with a photo and we'll make it right — replacement or refund, your choice.

What growing zones do your plants ship to?

Most of our plants are suited to USDA Hardiness Zones 5–9. Each product page includes the specific zone range for that plant. Some plants cannot ship to certain states due to agricultural regulations — this is noted on individual product pages.
