Description

Sweet Woodruff (Galium odoratum) is the go-to groundcover for challenging shady spots — a delicate-looking but surprisingly tough perennial that forms a lush, whorled green carpet under trees, along shaded paths, and in damp woodland areas where most groundcovers give up. In late spring it covers itself in dainty white star-shaped flowers, and the foliage releases a sweet vanilla-hay fragrance when dried. Deer resistant, low maintenance, and a classic choice for naturalistic woodland garden design.

Why Gardeners Choose Sweet Woodruff

  • Thrives in shade: One of the best performers in full to deep shade — fills in beautifully under tree canopies and along shaded walls.
  • Charming spring bloom: Covered in delicate white star-shaped flowers in late spring that illuminate dark garden areas.
  • Fragrant foliage: Dried leaves release a sweet vanilla-and-hay scent — traditionally used in sachets, potpourri, and May Wine.
  • Natural weed suppressor: Dense, self-knitting carpet crowds out weeds without needing mulch.
  • Deer resistant: Largely ignored by deer — a valuable trait for woodland and suburban gardens.
  • Handles dry shade: Goes dormant in summer drought and returns vigorously when moisture levels recover.

Planting & Care

  • Light: Full shade to part sun; protect from harsh afternoon sun.
  • Soil: Moist, organic-rich; tolerates damp woodland conditions well.
  • Mature size: 12 inches tall, spreads up to 20 inches per plant over time.
  • Watering: Keep consistently moist after planting; tolerates variable moisture once established.
  • Spacing: Space evenly across shaded slopes or path borders to allow stems to weave into a seamless mat.

Shipping Information

  • Ships in pint and quart pots, fully rooted and ready to plant.

When will my order ship?

Most orders ship within 2–5 business days. You'll receive a tracking email as soon as your order is on its way. Shipping times may vary slightly during peak growing season.

How do I plant my new plant when it arrives?

Water your plant thoroughly as soon as it arrives. Choose a location that matches the plant's light requirements, dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, and plant at the same depth it was growing in the pot. Water deeply after planting and keep the soil consistently moist for the first few weeks while roots establish.

What if my plant arrives damaged?

We stand behind every plant we ship. If your plant arrives damaged or in poor condition, please contact us within 5 days of delivery with a photo and we'll make it right — replacement or refund, your choice.

What growing zones do your plants ship to?

Most of our plants are suited to USDA Hardiness Zones 5–9. Each product page includes the specific zone range for that plant. Some plants cannot ship to certain states due to agricultural regulations — this is noted on individual product pages.
