Description

Pink Muhly Grass (Muhlenbergia capillaris) is one of the most spectacular fall-blooming ornamental grasses in the landscape — a fountain of fine green blades that erupts in late summer into an airy cloud of cotton candy-pink plumes that shimmer and dance in the breeze. Native to the eastern U.S., it's heat tolerant, drought tolerant, and thrives in sandy, dry sites where other plants struggle. A showstopper from late summer through winter with virtually no maintenance required.

Why Gardeners Choose Pink Muhly Grass

  • Stunning fall display: Massive pink plumes emerge from 4-foot stems in late summer — one of the most dramatic seasonal transformations of any ornamental grass.
  • Long season of interest: Plumes persist through fall and into winter, providing months of visual impact.
  • Drought and heat tolerant: Thrives in hot, dry, sandy conditions with minimal water once established.
  • Low maintenance: No deadheading, dividing, or spraying needed — just a cutback in late winter.
  • Versatile: Works beautifully in mass plantings, borders, containers, and dried arrangements.

Planting & Care

  • Light: Full sun to part shade.
  • Soil: Well-drained; thrives in sandy, lean, and dry soils.
  • Height: 4 feet tall, 3 feet wide with a cascading fountain habit.
  • Watering: Regular watering until established; very low needs after.
  • Pruning: Cut back to the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring if needed.

When will my order ship?

Most orders ship within 2–5 business days. You'll receive a tracking email as soon as your order is on its way. Shipping times may vary slightly during peak growing season.

How do I plant my new plant when it arrives?

Water your plant thoroughly as soon as it arrives. Choose a location that matches the plant's light requirements, dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, and plant at the same depth it was growing in the pot. Water deeply after planting and keep the soil consistently moist for the first few weeks while roots establish.

What if my plant arrives damaged?

We stand behind every plant we ship. If your plant arrives damaged or in poor condition, please contact us within 5 days of delivery with a photo and we'll make it right — replacement or refund, your choice.

What growing zones do your plants ship to?

Most of our plants are suited to USDA Hardiness Zones 5–9. Each product page includes the specific zone range for that plant. Some plants cannot ship to certain states due to agricultural regulations — this is noted on individual product pages.
