Description

Mexican Feather Grass (Nassella tenuissima) is one of the most graceful ornamental grasses you can grow — fine, hair-like foliage that catches every breeze and shimmers with soft movement all season long. Green through spring and summer, it develops warm golden-brown plumes by midsummer that persist into fall and winter. Drought tolerant, low maintenance, and stunning in mass plantings, borders, and containers.

Why Gardeners Choose Mexican Feather Grass

  • Extraordinary texture and movement: Feather-fine foliage sways in the slightest breeze — adds life and dynamic energy to any planting.
  • Seasonal color: Bright green in spring and early summer, transitioning to warm golden-tan plumes by midsummer that hold through winter.
  • Drought tolerant: Very low water needs once established — thrives in hot, dry conditions.
  • Low maintenance: Requires minimal care beyond a light tidy-up in early spring.
  • Versatile: Excellent in mass plantings, mixed borders, rock gardens, and containers.

Planting & Care

  • Light: Full sun to part shade.
  • Soil: Well-drained; tolerates lean, rocky, and sandy soils.
  • Watering: Occasional watering until established — drought tolerant once rooted in.
  • Maintenance: Cut back dead growth in early spring before new growth emerges.
  • Mass planting tip: Plant in groups of 5 or more for the most striking, unified display.

When will my order ship?

Most orders ship within 2–5 business days. You'll receive a tracking email as soon as your order is on its way. Shipping times may vary slightly during peak growing season.

How do I plant my new plant when it arrives?

Water your plant thoroughly as soon as it arrives. Choose a location that matches the plant's light requirements, dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, and plant at the same depth it was growing in the pot. Water deeply after planting and keep the soil consistently moist for the first few weeks while roots establish.

What if my plant arrives damaged?

We stand behind every plant we ship. If your plant arrives damaged or in poor condition, please contact us within 5 days of delivery with a photo and we'll make it right — replacement or refund, your choice.

What growing zones do your plants ship to?

Most of our plants are suited to USDA Hardiness Zones 5–9. Each product page includes the specific zone range for that plant. Some plants cannot ship to certain states due to agricultural regulations — this is noted on individual product pages.
